Wind Energy at Forecast Applications Branch

The LAPS/STMAS system is being used to produce rapid update, high resolution analyses and forecasts of winds. Shown below is a 1-km analysis running every 15 minutes running over parts of Colorado and adjoining states.

OSSE

Regional OSSE studies are proposed to assess the observational needs for improved 0-12 hour fine scale turbine level wind forecasts for wind energy generation applications. The work builds on experience and tools that NOAA accumulated and developed in the past decade in various Observing System Simulation Experiments (OSSE).

Model Initialization / Hot-Start

Wind analyses are forecasts are being produced over several domains. For example the Colorado domain produces hourly forecasts, initialized every 6 hours on a 5-km domain.
